FCT doctors suspend three-month strike

The Federal Capital Territory branch of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners on Sunday announced the immediate suspension of its three-month-long industrial action, following the intervention of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

The association, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Okoreaffia Ogbonnaya, appreciated the minister’s commitment and leadership in addressing the lingering welfare concerns that triggered the strike.

The doctors, alongside other staff employed by the Area Council Service Commission, had embarked on industrial action three months ago over issues related to unpaid salaries, allowances, and other concerns.

"We acknowledge and deeply appreciate his demonstrated commitment to addressing the welfare concerns of our members, including the initial payments received as part of the resolution process, displaying leadership and responsiveness which have been instrumental in restoring hope and confidence among healthcare workers in the FCT.

"In light of these developments, the NAGGMDP FCT branch hereby announces the immediate suspension of the three-month industrial action and urges all members to return to work immediately as we continue constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders,” the association noted.

The NAGGMDP FCT branch has, however, directed all its members to return to their duty posts immediately, while reaffirming its commitment to continued engagement with the FCT Administration and Area Council Chairmen to ensure the prompt settlement of all outstanding entitlements.

“We are committed to working closely with the FCT Administration and Area Council Chairmen to ensure the prompt payment of all pending salaries, allowances, and entitlements.

"Once again, we thank the Honourable Minister for his unwavering dedication to improving healthcare delivery and workers’ welfare in the FCT.

“We welcome efforts of dialogue and collaboration towards a sustainable and efficient healthcare system for all residents,” it added.
